Guidebook with maps/step-by-step
From the hiking sign at the top of the parking lot, Col de la Charmette (alt. 1,265 m), turn right towards Girieu, 3.3 km away. Follow a forest track due south, marked in yellow. The roller-coaster track takes you past the wide Fontaine Claire junction (alt. 1260 m) (warning: a broken blade "col de la Charmette"), where you continue left, then to a new intersection at point 1321. At the sign, leave the track and turn left towards Planfay-le-Bas. The sunken track descends a little, and joins a new half-asphalt track. Continue straight on to Girieu (alt. 1,270 m). At Girieu, fork left towards La Pinéa along the Vermorel path. You'll soon leave the clearing and begin a more serious ascent through the forest. Follow the yellow markings until you reach an old track where the path continues slightly to the right, above it, to reach the foot of a large rocky bar. The route continues to the left of this bar. Warning: this is the technical part of your hike. The path is sometimes narrow, passes over the top of rocky bars and, in wet weather, can become greasy and slippery. After a fine climb, you come out below the west face of La Pinéa, which you skirt to the left to reach a weakness to the north of the summit. From here, descend some 40 m to an easier path on the right (note: the PDIPR sign appears to be under renovation). After a final playful rocky ramp, you reach the summit of La Pinéa (alt. 1,771 m). Be careful: the summit is narrow and surrounded by sheer drops. From the summit, turn around and, at the intersection with the Vermorel path, continue straight downhill to the Plénom junction (alt. 1,615 m). You're now on the GR de Pays du Tour de Chartreuse, marked in yellow and red. Continue straight ahead along the Montfromage ridge towards Charmant Som. Follow the ridge continuously for almost 3 km, then, after a short but steady descent and a small flat spot, you reach the road to Charmant Som. On the asphalt, climb to the left to pass the Orgeval oratory, and in 5 minutes reach the intersection of the Charmant Som mountain pasture (alt. 1,640 m). Leave the road here, and turn left towards the Col de la Charmette, 2.5 km away. The descent is initially on a wide track, then after a wide left-hand hairpin bend, spot the path on the right at around 1,570 m, which plunges into the forest. The winding path quickly loses altitude until you reach a new track. Follow it to the right and finish your descent to your starting point, the Col de la Charmette.
Access: no public transport. Please note that the Col de la Charmette is not accessible in winter from December to March, depending on weather conditions (barrier closed upstream of the Hameau de Pomarey, 5 km from the pass), so check the info route websites beforehand. This tour is recommended from April to mid-November.
See and know : Col de la Charmette lies between Grande Sure to the west and Charmant Som to the east. The two brooks near the pass, one running north to the dead Guiers valley, the other south to the Isère valley, are both called "le Tenaison". Numerous chasms are located in the Génieux forest near the Col de la Charmette. The deepest is the Gouffre de Génieux, to the west, at an altitude of 1,410 m and a depth of 675 m.
